Vudu Cartography

We are delighted to offer the first entirely new book by Michael Bertiaux for more than 20 years. Vudu Cartography explores the mysteries of Vudu through chants, oracles, seances and a symbolic system of images – all connected by a descriptive narrative which leads us, like a dusty highway, through the shimmering landscape. Drawn from his experiences in Haiti, Bertiaux’s own evocative voudon ‘art brut’ images create a map for those regions of ‘invisible power’, giving the reader ingress to the ‘mysteries and hiddenesses of an exotic theology, with its spiritist twists and turns and esoteric spaces.’
Issued as the second volume in our Bibliotheque de Verseau series, Vudu Cartography includes more than 130 new Vudu images by the artist, all printed in full colour on archival paper. We have produced no other book quite like it, so potent seems the mix, and we hope you will agree.

Vudu Cartography arrived and is my new favorite art & occult tome. As an artist, I’ve always desired such a true balance, with the visual experience as the gnostic prelude, the focal point. Art/symbolism needs to be displayed this way… Anything less is incomplete when art, the visual, is the intended catalyst. Most books attempt to “cut corners” and squeeze the art in somewhere, due to cost, space and the lack of understanding of the value of the visual. Contrarily, this tome is designed entirely to “house” the spirit/art… the way it should be.
Recently received my copy of Bertiaux’s latest work in over 20 year : Vudu Cartography. The book is a gem! Visually stunning and contextually a wealth of information on Voudon to compliment and augment the information in Bertiaux’s magnum opus : The Voudon Gnostic Workbook. The regions within the Voudon experience are explored in depth along with the dark and intriguing realms in-between… My favorite places a la Kenneth Grant. As to those originally missing diagrams and vevers from the current softbound VGW, you’ll find all the diagrams and illustration you should need in his Vudu Cartography. The artwork is a trip all by itself. But, Vudu Cartography is just not a book of art by Bertiaux as I first thought. There’s much more text than paintings/illustrations with a gold mine of information within this volume. Simply stated : This work by Michael Bertiaux oozes magick…
I have seen the deluxe edition and a very high quality production it is too. Superbly produced, generously illustrated – it’s a whole work of art in itself.
I was never very partial to Bertiaux, and see in retrospect that this was because the Magickal Childe book, and Kenneth Grant, served him extremely poorly as publicists. However I’ve eaten all my words about the man now, and happily, because Vudu Cartography is a superb piece of work – both textually and graphically, and high praise is due to both author and publisher. The dragged-brush image of yellow and red paint that illuminates the endpapers is a beautiful touch, and it just gets better from there.
