Gérard Legrand (1927–1999), was a French surrealist poet, philosopher, essayist and film critic. He met André Breton in December 1948, and became one of his closest collaborators, working on the surrealist journals Medium (1954–5) and Le Surrealisme, même (1957–9). In 1955, he assisted Breton with completing L'Art magique for Le Club français du livre. In 1960, he presented the collection Poésie et autres by Breton. He directed the magazine Bief from 1958 to 1960. His active participation in the Paris surrealist group's enterprises until 1969 contributed to broadening the audience for surrealism. After the dissolution of the group, he collaborated on the magazine Coupure and participated in the activities of the group Now3. In 1991, he wrote an introduction to the Phèbus/Adam Biro edition of L’Art magique.
